How sodium batteries work:

 

Similar to the working principle of lithium-ion battery, sodium-ion battery is also a kind of dislodged battery. When charging, sodium ions dislodged from the positive electrode into the negative electrode, and when discharging, sodium ions from the negative electrode into the positive electrode. The electrons in the external circuit go from the negative to the positive and the sodium ions are reduced to sodium.

 

The main and auxiliary materials of sodium ion battery and the differences with lithium battery:


Cathode Material: The difference of cathode material is the biggest difference between sodium ion battery and lithium ion battery. At present, cathode materials are mainly divided into several categories: sodium transition metal oxides, sodium transition metal phosphate, sodium transition metal sulfate, sodium transition metal Prussian blue compounds.
Anode Materials: Soft carbon, hard carbon, transition metal oxides, etc. considering the cost, stability, cycling performance and other indicators of anode materials, the most easy to achieve industrialization and commercialization, is still carbon materials, mainly hard and soft carbon. The main anode material of lithium battery is graphite, and only high power anode material will use hard and soft carbon material and lithium titanate.

 

Electrolyte: Sodium salt & solvent, except sodium salt, the solvent is not very different from lithium ion battery, PC can be used.

Separator: Same as lithium ion battery.

Package: Cylindrical, soft package, square, the same as lithium ion battery.

Preparation process: Basically the same as lithium ion battery.

The main reason why sodium-ion batteries can be commercialized quickly is that they can use existing equipment and processes of lithium batteries.
